Calm and Caring Dentistry
Are you a nervous patient? Do you fear dental visits? We can help!
At Manor Dental Health in Hull we try to make your dental visits as calm and stress-free as possible. We do this in a number of ways; by being patient, understanding, unhurried, genuinely empathic and investing in technology that helps relieve anxiety.
Patients can sometimes worry about local anaesthetic injections. To help reduce any stress, we have invested in a computer-controlled anaesthetic delivery system that works more effectively than traditional syringes, resulting in a more pleasant experience that is pain free.
The Wand can be used on adults and children and it is so precise that your dentist can numb-up just one tooth. The result is no numbness of the tongue, cheek or lip, allowing you to return to your routine able to eat, drink and smile. You might not even know you’ve had an injection.
Both Principal dentist, Nick Allday, and his hygiene therapist Anna are able to offer dental acupuncture to help with a wide range of dental problems such as dental anxiety, gagging during treatment and facial and jaw pain. As a member of the British Dental Acupuncture Society he has received specific training in acupuncture techniques to give you the best results.
Acupuncture is a medical treatment developed in China thousands of years ago that has received a huge amount of interest, and is now becoming increasingly popular in the West.
- Dental anxiety
- TMJ (jaw joint) problems
- Facial pain
- Muscle spasm in the head and neck
- Stress headaches & migraine
- Rhinitis & sinusitis
- Gagging
- Dry mouth problems
- Post-operative pain
During a treatment, acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into the body. For most dental treatments generally these will be in the head and neck area, although sometimes arms, hands, or feet may be used. The treatment session is generally 15 - 25 minutes long and uses between 6 and 12 needles. Acupuncture is not a replacement for conventional treatments or local anaesthetic injections. The control of gagging during dental treatment is very important to improve the care that a patient can receive. Gagging can sometimes make it almost impossible to fully examine the mouth, or take x-rays. Acupuncture can quite easily control gagging (about 80% reliable) using needles around the mouth, or ears. Patients can then receive treatment comfortably and with much less stress.

We have a number of patients who used to be very anxious about visiting us. Here is what a couple of them had to say about their experience at Manor Dental Health:
Having never been to a dentist for many years due to being totally terrified, after weeks of toothache I was advised to attend Nick Allday’s practice at Manor Dental Health. After the initial examination I was informed that an extraction would be needed and also a filling. My response was to cry hysterically and shake from head to foot. Both the assistant and Nick were very calming and waited for my anxiety to calm down. Nick explained exactly what was going to happen stage by stage and after each step he stopped to make sure I was happy with him continuing. The assistant held my hand and spoke to me calmly all the way through the procedure which made me feel they were not patronising but really cared.
I have been back now on a further two occasions and I can honestly say my fears, which have not totally disappeared, have definitely diminished and I will continue attending all future appointments.
- C.MHaving watched the calendar over a period of time as my dental appointment booking came ever nearer... the fight or flight mechanism was in full mode as I sat in the dental chair. Always a dental-phobe since childhood the apprehension was HUGE! I have to state I did not feel the injections; I did not feel any discomfort throughout treatment. This dentist is more than professionally excellent – he is a genius.

- J.T.2. Having been an extremely nervous dental patient in the past
I was very unsure as to whether I should pursue my wish to straighten my front teeth. However, I need not have worried. From initial consultation to the treatment being carried out, I felt comfortable and confident every step of the way. I cannot believe the treatment of re-contouring was pain free! I am delighted with my enhanced smile and no longer avoid smiling from certain angles for photos – thank you so much.

- C.M4. Thank you for giving me something to smile about.
Before coming to you, I was very apprehensive about having any work undertaken and of how the final result would be. Previous dentistry work had left me feeling very self-conscious. However I am so happy with the excellent results. My new smile is actually better than I expected. My new teeth look totally natural, which is just what I wanted. Throughout the treatment I felt absolutely no pain. I was made to feel very comfortable and relaxed. So thanks again to the entire team. I will recommend you at every opportunity.
