Dental implant treatment step by step

1. Smile consultation and smile analysis at Manor Dental Health, Hull

We offer a free smile analysis to all existing and new patients with one of our treatment co-ordinators. This is a good opportunity to talk about what you’d like to change and discover different potential treatment options. For patients with missing teeth or loose dentures, tooth implants can be a wonderful option as they restore your smile and mouth function for the long term.

If you’d like to find out more about dental implants and your suitability for the treatment, the next step would be to have a smile analysis with Nick Allday, our principal dentist. Nick will take an in-depth look at your teeth and overall dental health. He will also take X-rays, photographs and models of your teeth.

There may be other treatment options for you to consider and Nick will talk through each one in detail including timings and costs to help you come to the right decision for you.

2. Putting your dental implant plan together

At Manor Dental Health in Hull, all of our tooth implant treatments are completely bespoke to each patient. We’ll use the X-rays and models taken during your assessment to work out the optimal position for an implant, how many tooth implants you will need and the quality and amount of bone to place the implant/s into.

If you have any dental health problems such as gum disease, we’ll devise and action an immediate treatment plan. We will also extract any failing teeth at this point.

3. Placing the dental implants

Tooth implants in Hull are made of 3 parts – a titanium screw/rod, a connecting part and a crown (the part that looks like a real tooth). During this stage, the screw is placed precisely into your jawbone. This is a small surgical procedure that’s carried out under local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable.

At the beginning of the procedure, an incision is made in your gums. Then a small hole is drilled into the bone with a specialised drill. The screw part of the tooth implant is inserted into the hole before the site is stitched.

4. Healing and integration

Dental implants can take from 3 months to 6 months to fuse with your bone. We understand that this is a long time and will provide temporary replacement teeth or dentures to avoid any obvious gaps.

When the tooth implant has fused with the bone, we will fit the permanent crown, bridge or dentures onto the implant. The crowns or bridges are created using the impressions of your teeth taken during the initial assessment for a perfect match.

5. Looking after your dental implants for the long term

Dental implants not only look and feel like real teeth, they can also decay and deteriorate when neglected. One of their wonderful benefits is that you care for them in the same way as you would your natural teeth. But it’s essential that brushing and flossing is thorough and regular and that you attend all check-up and hygiene appointments.
